POP - Project Our Place: Arts in the Heart of Blackburn
1 February - 13 March
Artichoke Studios
An empty shop in Blackburn town centre has been converted into the base
for a six-week creative hub by local artists' studios and Darwen Borough Council.
POP - Project Our Place: Arts in the
Heart of Blackburn aims to celebrate Blackburn and its people
through workshops
and events for local people and their communities.
The premises were
formerly an interior design shop, the Waterloo Pavilion, and are being used as temporary artist 'open' studios during the conversion.
Local artist facilitators are using the venue to provide arts workshops and introduce people to new skills. Sessions include
painting, street dancing, t-shirt printing, interactive poetry workshops, story
telling and music workshops.
Partners involved
include Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council (Arts Services and
Regeneration teams), Artichoke Studios (a group of local artists), and
Action Factory (a Blackburn-based community arts
organisation).

The project is part of the national Living Places initiative to promote the use of
culture and sport in regenerating towns and cities and was set up by
the Museums and Libraries Archive Council (MLA). Living Places made a successful bid to the government's Transformation Fund for the project.
