NFASP Steering Group: Michael Cubey

Michael Cubey, Independent

I provide advice, research and advocacy for the visual artist sector, with a particular focus on affordable studio provision for artists. I also work part-time at ACAVA in London, managing the maintenance and health and safety of the ACAVA studio portfolio and I am a trustee of Bow Arts Trust.

Previously, I managed and developed Cable Street Studios and Gallery, a single site artists' studio/gallery complex of 150 studios, with two exhibition spaces, from 1994 to 2000. Subsequently, until 2005, I was Director of Property and Capital Development at SPACE and was centrally involved in the funding and project management of several studio sites including the Triangle, SPACE’s main studio/office/gallery complex. I bring to all of this the direct experience of being a practising visual artist.

I have been involved with the NFASP since its formation. I wrote a report examining the extent of the subsidy provided by the affordable studios sector in London (compared to commercial rents) for the Capital Studios programme, managed by Acme Studios, and I have recently completed the first NFASP commissioned report, a case study looking at the public benefit created by two Nottingham studio groups.

There is a real need for studio groups to access the wealth of shared knowledge that exists in the sector and I would like the importance of affordable workspace for the cultural sector included at a national planning level.
